How to apply DTF transfers step by step: times, temperatures and tips

The DTF (Direct To Film) technique has become a favorite of workshops and clothing brands thanks to its versatility and the quality of the finish.
But to achieve a professional result, it is key to apply the transfer correctly : temperature, pressure and ironing time make all the difference.
This guide shows you how to do it step by step .

1. Materials needed

  • Heat iron (industrial ironing machine or heat press).

  • Clean, dry garment (cotton, polyester, or blend).

  • Printed DTF transfer.

  • Protective paper (tracing paper or Teflon).

2. Prepare the garment

  1. Pre-ironing (5 seconds at 160 °C)

    • Eliminates moisture and wrinkles.

    • Ensure a uniform surface for transfer.

3. Placement of the transfer case

  • Place the DTF film with the design facing down , in the exact position.

  • Use heat-resistant tape if you need to secure it.

4. Temperature and time settings

Prices may vary depending on the type of garment, but the most commonly used are:

  • Cotton : 160 °C – 165 °C for 15 seconds.

  • Polyester or blends : 150 °C – 12 to 15 seconds.

💡 Tip : Test first on a corner or sample garment.

5. Adequate pressure

  • Medium-high pressure so that the ink fuses with the fibers.

  • If the pressure is low, the design may peel off with washing.

6. Cooling and peeling the film

  • Let the transfer cool for 5 to 10 seconds (cold peel) before removing the film.

  • Slowly remove the film at a 180° angle.

7. Second ironing (optional but recommended)

  • Place a protective paper on top.

  • Iron for another 5 seconds at the same temperature.

  • Ensures greater durability and a matte/satin finish.

8. Quick Checklist

  • ✅ Pre-ironed and dry garment.

  • ✅ Transfer well centered.

  • ✅ Correct temperature and time according to fabric.

  • ✅ Cold peeled to avoid lifting.

Garment care

  • Wash in cold water or max. 30°C.

  • Avoid tumble drying and ironing directly on the print.

Conclusion

Applying a DTF transfer isn't complicated, but every detail counts to ensure vibrant colors and a print that lasts wash after wash.
